ITEM: One hour mentorship (face to face in Mornington Peninsula cafe, or over phone) with children’s author Wendy Orr.

BIO:Wendy Orr was born in Edmonton, Canada, and spent her childhood in various places across Canada, France, and the USA, but wherever she lived, there were lots of stories, adventures and animals. Wendy fell in love with the mountains when she went to summer camp in the Rockies when she was eight. When she was twelve, she climbed Pike’s Peak in Colorado with her father and sister, and will never forget the thrill of reaching the top! Raven’s Mountainis set in the high mountain country of British Columbia in Canada. This area is the home of many wild animals, including grizzlies and black bears. And very occasionally, a rare white Spirit Bear from the central coast of British Columbia has also been spotted further inland… Wendy is the author of several award-winning books, including Nim’s Island, Nim at Sea, Spook’s Shack, Mokie and Bik, and for teenagers, Peeling the Onion.

CV: Wendy Orr is an award winning children’s writer who lives with her husband in Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula near Melbourne. She was born in Edmonton, Canada, in 1953, but spent her childhood in various places across Canada, France and the USA. After arriving in Australia in 1976, Wendy worked as an occupational therapist until 1991 when she was involved in a car accident. She started writing in 1986. In 2008 the movie of Nim’s Island produced by Walden Media and starring Jodie Foster, Abigail Breslin and Gerard Butler screened in cinemas in the USA, Australia and around the world in New Zealand, Italy, the UK, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Malaysia and Israel and other countries when tie-in editions of Nim’s Island were published along with the sequel Nim at Sea. In 2007 Mokie and Bikwas published by Henry Holt in the USA and Nim at Sea, was first pubished in Australia by Allen & Unwin. More Mokie and Bik books will follow in the USA in 2009 and 2010. In 2006 three children’s books written by Wendy were published in Australia: Across the Dark Sea (National Museum Canberra), Too Much Stuff (Penguin Nibble); and Mokie and Bik (Allen & Unwin).
