BIO: Susan Whelan is a full-time mother of three, with a passion for words and literature. During high school, she contributed articles to school magazines and was involved in several extracurricular creative-writing projects. Since then, her creative writing has been largely limited to regular journal entries and frequent correspondence with friends and family both interstate and internationally. In the past few years, her writing skills have been honed through essays related to her university studies. Susan is currently completing a Bachelor of Arts with a focus on English and History. She is a member of the NSW Writers’ Centre and has recently been accepted as a member of Mensa.

BIO: Meredith Flynn is also a full-time mother, who until recently also worked in a busy travel agency, where she found that organising last-minute round-the-world itineraries was an absolute doddle compared with looking after two young children. Meredith’s interest in words and writing also began in high school where she was an active member of the public speaking and debating teams. 200 Cook Book/The Blue Ribbon Cook Book: Liz Harfull

ITEM: One copy of  ‘The Blue Ribbon Cook Book’ by Liz Harfull signed by the author.

DETAILS: Every year hundreds of talented amateurs spend countless hours preparing entries for cookery competitions run as part of some 600 country shows across Australia. These cooks range from stalwarts well known and respected in their local communities for their prize-winning efforts over many years, to talented newcomers using tried and true recipes and techniques handed down from generation to generation.

Some of their stories and recipes have been captured in The Blue Ribbon Cookbook, published by Wakefield Press in September 2008. The book focusses on 50 South Australian shows and their top cooks, capturing their secret tips and the recipes they have used to win those precious first prizes and blue ribbons.

Now in its third print run, the best-seller was named runner-up in the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards announced in Paris in July 2009, after competing against 56 finalists from around the world. In April 2010 it was short-listed for the biennial Le Cordon Bleu World Food Media Awards.

Author Liz Harfull is now researching and writing a national version capturing more stories and recipes from across Australia.

CV: Liz Harfull only 10 years old when she decided to become a journalist and writer. At the age of 12 she contributed her first published piece to a book in memory of Robe author Kathleen Bermingham, who was an early mentor; and at 17 she started her cadetship as a journalist at her local newspaper, The Border Watch.

Since then Liz has worked for a range of Australian and overseas publications as a full-time journalist, freelance writer and photographer. She also spent more than 10 years with one of Australia’s leading public relations consultancies, building a national reputation in the rural sector and being awarded a Churchill Fellowship which took her overseas to study better ways to communicate with farmers.

Today she lives and writes from her home in the  beautiful Adelaide Hills. In her spare time Liz volunteers as a committee member of her local historical society, and as president of the Australian Council of Agricultural Journalists – the umbrella organisation for the country’s five rural press clubs.

The Blue Ribbon Cookbook was her first book, bringing together her love of country shows, cooking and story-telling.  A keen amateur cook who thinks whipping up afternoon tea for 20 people is a great way to relax at the weekend, she became a prize-winning show cook in her own right while researching the book, winning prizes for her scones and jubilee cake. Her late father helped to set up one of the smallest surviving district shows in Australia – at Mil Lel.

233 Biography/Affection (USA Edition): Krissy Kneen

ITEM: One signed copy of ‘Affection A memoir of love, sex and intimacy’ by Krissy Kneen.

DETAILS:

  • shortlisted, Biography of the Year, ABIA, 2010
  • shortlisted, Non-Fiction category, QLD Premier’s Literary Awards, 2010

Colour. I see colour. I feel heat and pressure and the edges of everything become indistinct. I hover at the edge of a thought. When I fall over the edge I am surprised. Pleased. It is as if I have succumbed to colour. I am filled with it, and full of the idea of smell. My body pulses in the aftermath of this transformation.

This is my first orgasm. I can name it now. I can re-live it. But back then, at the beginning of things, there was no line between the colours and the heat and the scent.

When she was a child Krissy Kneen fell deeply, helplessly in love with her own sexuality. As a young woman she pursued her desires down whatever risk-strewn paths they led. Now, middle-aged and happily married, she remains driven by the need for orgasm, racked by obsessive lust, constantly in thrall to the temptation of pornography.

Could this be a problem?

Affection is the true story of a woman, her body and the extraordinary adventures they’ve shared. It is erotic, insightful and gorgeously written—a profound and disturbing odyssey of self-acceptance, from a major new voice in Australian literature.

CV:Krissy Kneen is a writer and bookseller. She is the author of a short collection of erotica, Swallow the Sound, and she lives in New Farm, Brisbane with her husband.Affection is her first full-length book.

Finally, Rod decided to speak out. His story created a nation-wide sensation and won a prestigious award for the journalist who broke it.
That Rod survived at all, is nothing short of a miracle. Salvation is a story of courage and the indomitable Aussie spirit.

Website:http://www.bigskypublishing.com.au/bookview.php?iid=172&vt=B

Book information: One Woman’s journey through Taliban strongholds

On September 11, 2001, the World changed forever when ruthless Al-Qaeda terrorists launched an aerial attack on the United States of America. Oblivious to the world’s terror, Kay and Kerry Danes sat half a world away, secure in an Embassy after a terrifying 11-month hostage ordeal in communist Laos.

As fear gripped the globe, Kerry an Australian Special Forces soldier, comforted his wife Kay, as they struggled to come to terms with their hellish ordeal of torture, mock executions and the helplessness of leaving behind 58 political prisoners of a long forgotten war. The couple’s hopes focused only on seeing their children again.

In the years after regaining their freedom and working to re-piece together family life, Kerry returned to active duty with the Special Forces and Kay turned her dark experiences towards creating social justice, over the years becoming a leading international humanitarian. In November 2008, amidst haunting memories of her Laos ordeal, Kay faced her fears and embarked on a humanitarian aid mission to deliver life-changing opportunities and aid to people devastated in war-torn Afghanistan.

In an old dusty Toyota mini-van, armed only with hope, Kay and her companions, a florist from Arizona, a nurse from Texas, a public servant from Australia and a US Marine Korean War veteran, drove the ancient Silk Road amidst kidnappings, suicide bombings, carnage and chaos.

This powerful story will have you gripping your chair and holding your breath, as you travel with Kay through Taliban strongholds and the remote wastelands of Al Qaeda terrorists. Her story provides a rare glimpse of places we may never visit and the courageous Afghan people determined to persevere against overwhelming odds. Beneath the Pale Blue Burqa is a truly inspiring journey and an important contribution to the selfless efforts of all who have gone before to brave the perils of Afghanistan.

Kay and Kerry endured brutal interrogations, mock executions, torture, and the forced separation from their three small children for 10 harrowing months. If not for the Australian government’s strong intervention and lobbying, Kay and Kerry Danes would not have regained their freedom.

Item: A copy of the Fairfield Writers Group anthology – Beginnings: Queensland Stories

Details:

Book Information: 2009 is Queensland’s 150th birthday year. The Fairfield Writers Group is helping to celebrate with this anthology of Queensland stories.

Whether you live in Queensland, are a visitor, or are interested in Queensland living, you will identify with stories in this book. If you migrated here yourself or have origins overseas or interstate, or have moved from the country to a city, this anthology records the trauma of dislocation and the triumph of adaptation and participation in the Queensland community. That community is changing. There are new relationships full of surprises to delight every reader.
